Car-care isn’t just for the professionals! As long as the damage is minor, even simple DIY skills can save you money on repairs for your car’s paint and body. In the guide below, the technicians at Bennett INFINITI of Wilkes-Barre show you how to fix a dent in a car, and how to fix scratches on car paint.

How to Fix Scratches On a Car

Especially when your car is brand new, you’re going to notice every little scratch that appears in your car’s paint. While deeper scratches may require you to schedule service for repairs, many minor scratches can be waxed or buffed away. Below, we’ll go over how to fix scratches on a car’s clear coat.

Your car’s paint is protected by a layer of clear coat. As a result, many small scratches don’t even reach your car’s actual paint. Follow these steps to diagnose and fix scratches on a car’s clear coat layer:

  1. Inspect the scratch to determine its severity, and to make sure that it doesn’t go beyond the clear coat.
  2. Gather cleaning supplies: soap, bucket, sponge, and a towel.
  3. Clean, rinse, and dry the area. Clean equipment is important for preventing dirt or debris from causing more damage.
  4. Tape off the scratch so that you won’t lose sight of it as you repair it.
  5. Sand down the taped-off area: use 5000 grit sandpaper for deeper clear coat scratches, and 5000 grit for shallow scratches. Spray the area and the sandpaper first.
  6. Continue respraying with water and sanding until the scratch disappears. For deep scratches, follow the 3000 grit sandpaper with 5000 grit.
  7. With the scratch gone, clean the area again.
  8. Use a microfiber cloth to add polish. With a clean cloth, clean away any excess polish.
  9. Add wax to protect the clear coat and paint.

How to Fix a Small Dent In a Car

Not only is it possible to fix scratches on a car yourself, but you can also fix dents in a car bumper or body, as long as the damage is minor. Whether you live in Scranton or Clarks Summit, dents are an inevitable part of driving. But learning how to fix a small dent in a car will help you to keep your car looking like new, without spending money to repair every last dent. Some popular DIY methods include:

  • Using a suction cup. You can find a basic suction cup dent puller tool at a Dunmore-area INFINITI dealership’s parts department. The suction cup creates a strong vacuum, allowing you to pull out the dent.
  • Using a hair dryer and mallet. If you have some bodywork experience, this method is a very effective way to fix a dent in car body panels. Remove the body panel with the dent, and heat the dent for several minutes with the hair dryer. Then, simply knock the dented aea back into place with the mallet.
